CMA CGM’s newbuild New Panamax containership CMA CGM Lisa Marie suffered a mechanical failure during sea trials last week in China.

Namely, on September 20 the ship’s personnel sent a distress call to Chinese Rescue and Salvage Bureau as the ship was disabled amid stormy weather in coastal waters near Shanghai.

Once informed of the incident, East China rescue bureau dispatched a search and rescue ship to the scene where the stricken boxship was battling 6.4 meters high waves.

The vessel’s crew managed to put the containership under tow and towed it to Zhoushan Xinya Shipyard, where the ship is said to be undergoing necessary repairs.

There have been no reports of injury to the 164 people who were on board the CMA CGM ship when the incident occurred. The extent of the needed repairs was not disclosed.

CMA CGM is yet to reply to WMN with a comment on the matter.

The 10,926 TEU ship is being built by China Shipping Heavy Industry and has a market value of USD 75.38 million, according to VesselsValue.

The boxship was ordered in an en bloc transaction in January 2014.

The vessel’s latest AIS data show the ship is at anchor at Zhou Shan, with Liuhengdao as reorted captain’s destination.
