The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has invited parties to submit their expression of interest for the concession of the dry bulk terminal in the country’s port of Takoradi.

The authority said that the concession, which is set at a period of 20 years, or more, depending on the level of proposed investment, provides the right and obligation to complete the development, operate and transfer back the dry bulk terminal.

The objectives of the concession are to introduce an independent terminal operator into the port to handle bulk ore cargo and to generate the necessary incentives for the development of ore mines, to increase the bulk ore cargo throughput capacity and the operational efficiency of the port, and to increase employment opportunities for Ghanaians.

GPHA said that the deadline for the submission of statements of qualifications is June 30, 2016.

The Takoradi Port Expansion Program was launched in 2014 and included the extension of the breakwater, the deepening of the access channel and port basin, and the construction of the infrastructure for the dry bulk terminal with a depth at the quay of CD -16 meters.

After the expansion works finish, the new terminal is expected to handle capesize vessels, as well as export of manganese and bauxite, and import of clinker among others.

The design capacity of the terminal stands at 10 million tons, according to GPHA.

“Opportunities exist for further development of services for additional cargo portfolio as volumes increase in the coming years,” the authority said.
