Port of Oakland’s Revamped Terminal Resumes Vessel Operations
Port of Oakland’s outer harbor Ben E. Nutter marine terminal has re-opened following two months of modernization to improve cargo handling.
The terminal, managed by Everport Terminal Services, began renovations in November and closed last month to complete improvements that included rebuilding the entrance gates for harbor truckers, adding more than 100 new pieces of cargo-handling equipment, and a new terminal operating system.
“Across the port we’re taking steps to improve performance and efficiency,” said Maritime Director John Driscoll.
Ben E. Nutter terminal re-opened last week to begin receiving export cargo and empty containers.
It will resume vessel operations today with the arrival of a 1,100-foot container vessel Ever Liberal, owned by Taiwanese carrier Evergreen Line.
The port recently set a record as it received the largest vessel ever to call a US port, the CMA CGM Benjamin Franklin, owned by container shipping line CMA CGM.
As World Maritime News reported, the first 18,000 TEU capacity ship ever to visit this port, moored in Oakland on December 31, 2015.
Featuring a length of 1,310 feet, CMA CGM Benjamin Franklin symbolically opened the Trans-Pacific trade route between Asia and North America to megaships.
