Dutch shipbuilder Ferus Smit has launched Snow Crystal, the first in a series of two new ships ordered by Swedish shipping company Erik Thun AB.

The 5,680 dwt mini bulker was splashed at Ferus Smit’s Westerbroek yard on October 21.

As informed, Snow Crystal and its sister vessel, which is currently under construction, are expected to replace Snowstar and Ice Star, Erik Thun’s older drybulk vessels built in 1996 and 1997, respectively.

The new mini bulkers have an iceclass 1A and two cargo holds. Their design is dedicated to some specific trades in the Baltic region, according to Ferus Smit.

Featuring a length of 13.35 meters, Snow Crystal will be able to fit into the locks of the Trollhattan Canal. The 89-meter-long bulker has a hold volume of 207,000 cft.

Scheduled to be completed in spring 2018, Snow Crystal’s sister vessel will have a length of 100.6 meters and a width of 13.35 meters.

The newbuildings will have an accommodation space for eight crew members.
