Canada to Inject USD 17 Mn into Marine Atlantic
Image Courtesy: Marine AtlanticThe Government of Canada has revealed its plan to invest CAD 22 million (USD 17 million) in three infrastructure projects to upgrade the existing facilities of the country’s ferry operator Marine Atlantic in Port aux Basques, Newfoundland and Labrador, and in North Sydney, Nova Scotia.
The aim of the project is to connect the two provinces and provide “efficient ferry services” between them, the government said.
The first project will include upgrading the mooring system that will increase safety, while the second one will include an upgrade of the dock fenders to minimize the wear and tear of docking on vessels and docks.
The third project will be undertaken in the Port aux Basques’ terminal yard to enhance the facility’s storm sewer system “to improve operating conditions in the terminal yard.”
“The funding announced in Budget 2016 will continue to strengthen Marine Atlantic’s vital transportation service for the citizens of Newfoundland and Labrador including those who rely on the shipment of goods to and from the province on a daily basis,” Marc Garneau, Canada’s Minister of Transport said.
