VIDEO: Boxship Arrested after Hit-and-Run

A 1999-built container ship MV Olf, which was involved in a hit-and-run incident with two other vessels, was arrested in Malaysian waters on February 23, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) reported.

The incident, which occurred some five days earlier off Batu Ayam in the Singapore Strait, caused damage to tanker vessels Tina 7 and Straits 3 while they were anchored off the coast.

After the accident, the 40,000 dwt MV Olf sailed away without contacting the vessels.

MMEA, who tracked down the vessel and boarded it, said that the incident did not cause water pollution in the area. The agency added that Singaporean and Indonesian coast guards assisted in locating the runaway vessel.

At the time of the incident the vessel was reportedly on its way from Hong Kong to a scrap yard in India, carrying sixteen crew members of Indian and Sri Lankan nationalities.

There were no reports of injuries to the crew members.

Local authorities will conduct an investigation into the incident.
