Bulk Carrier Runs Aground in St. Lawrence Channel

The 623-foot bulk carrier Pacific Huron ran aground on December 27 outside the St. Lawrence Seaway channel, according to the US Coast Guard.

USCG informed that the forward portion of the vessel is aground and their stern anchor is deployed.

Pacific Huron is 1,000 feet outside of the channel. There are no reported injuries to the crew, and no reported leaks, pollution, or flooding on the vessel.

The seaway is continuing to manage traffic around the vessel through the navigation channel.

The 29,975 dwt bulker, loaded with soybean, grounded near Wellesley Island, while it was sailing from Canada’s Port Weller to Montreal. AIS data provided by MarineTraffic shows that the 2010-built vessel is still stuck at the site.

Inspectors from the Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation (SLSDC), the Canadian St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation and a marine inspector from the Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment Massena, were expected to board the Pacific Huron to conduct their initial investigation. USCG added that additional assessments will also be made.

According to VesselsValue, the ship is operated by German-based shipping firm Reedereigruppe Freese.
