Box Volumes Drive HHLA’s Revenue Growth

German terminal operator Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) saw a 12 percent rise in its container throughput for the first half of 2017, while container transport increased by some 7 percent.

HHLA handled 3.58 million TEUs during the first half of 2017, up from 3.2 million TEUs reported in the first six months of 2016. The operator’s Intermodal subsidiaries also achieved volume growth which reached 744 thousand TEUs for the first half, rising from 694 thousand TEUs seen in the corresponding period a year earlier.

The company recorded significant year-on-year growth in its key performance indicators in the first half of 2017 as its revenue rose by almost 9 percent to EUR 622.8 million from EUR 573.5 million, while operating result (EBIT) surged by 48 percent to EUR 98.8 million from EUR 66.9 million seen in the same period in the previous year.

This was primarily attributable to higher earnings in the container segment due to an increase in volumes.

“Following the reorganisation of the alliances of the shipping companies, HHLA managed to maintain its strong position in contested market environments. We are not just benefiting from ongoing positive economic developments in the world and in Germany; we are also profiting from our own service capability,” Angela Titzrath, Chairwoman of the Executive Board, said.

“HHLA took timely steps to prepare for this upswing by making targeted investments in our facilities. This means we can offer our customers a range of services that offer a high level of quality and reliability, and thus generate growth at the Port of Hamburg with them,” Titzrath added.
