USA: Yusen Terminals International Implements Navis Marine Telematics

Navis, a part of Cargotec Corporation, today announced Yusen Terminals International (YTI) in San Pedro, California implemented Navis Marine Telematics, Automated Container Handoff, using integrated hardware solutions provided by the Navis Star Technology Alliance. The Navis Star Technology Alliance brings together Navis’ terminal operating system (TOS) solutions with best-of-breed technology vendors to offer complete solutions for terminal operating customers. Navis Automated Container Handoff integrates Navis SPARCS TOS with WhereNet position detection systems (PDS), real-time locating systems (RTLS) and middleware software, to automate the transfer of a container between the truck and the cargo handling equipment (CHE), optimizing the delivery and transfer of import containers to street trucks.

The Navis Marine Telematics solution utilizes Navis Star Technology Alliance partner Zebra Technologies’ WhereNet tags to ensure that trucks proceed to the correct position in the yard with the automatic identification of the truck at the rubber tyred gantry (RTG). From there, the terminal can automatically dispatch the RTG using Navis SPARCS Equipment Control, and track the RTG moves within the terminal using PDS, confirming that the right container has been delivered to the correct truck.

“The solution provided by Navis and its partners gives us process automation capabilities which extend beyond the gate and has successfully enabled us to reduce truck turn-times and accurately identify and track RTG movement,” says Patrick Burgoyne, president and CEO of YTI. “The deployment has been a huge success for us and we have confidence that the system will continue to exceed our expectations.”

With the integrated solution through the Navis partnership, YTI has been able to improve terminal safety and RTG productivity. Moves per hour have increased by 20 percent and error rates have been reduced to less than 5 percent. Improved truck turn-times are also a welcomed but unexpected benefit of the automation project.

“We’re pleased that YTI has had such great results with their terminal automation project,” says Bill Walsh, president and CEO of Navis, LLC. “Through the Navis Star Technology Alliance, we provide YTI and all of our customers with the complete, fully integrated solutions necessary to efficiently manage and improve container operations.”
