British ship owner Lomar Shipping has inked an order with China’s Guangzhou Wenchong Shipyard for construction of two 2,700 TEU containerships.
The contract includes options for two more units.
The ships feature 186 meters in lenght, 34.8 meters in width and 17.9 m depth. The value of the contract and the delivery dates of the newbuilds have not been disclosed.
According to Guangzhou Wenchong, the contract signing is a proof of the company’s ability to secure orders in a very tough and extremely competitive market.
The contract comes on the back of Lomar’s order for six 2200TEU container ships at the yard, which is a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC).
In July, Lomar added five second-hand container vessels to its fleet bringing the total container fleet to 53 and the overall Lomar fleet to almost 80 ships.
The latest additions included the Los Angeles Trader and the Long Beach Trader, both 2007 CSBC-built post panamax container vessels. At 6,000 TEU they become the largest ships in the Lomar container fleet.
This follows the recent acquisition of the Cape Maas and Cape Madrid, both 2011 Wenchong-built 2,800 TEU gearless container vessels.
Lomar Corporation is a ship-owning and management group, owned by the Libra Group. Its fleet of almost 80 vessels includes bulk carriers, container ships, offshore vessels, LPG, products and chemical tankers.
