Vietnamese Freighter Hits Coral Reefs off Philippines
A Vietnam-flagged freighter ran aground and damaged coral reefs around 800 meters off the entrance to Legazpi City Port, on Monday, June 15, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reports.
The 2013-built, 4,532 GT MV Ocean 3 was en route to Albay Gulf when it hit the coral reefs.
The incident was reported to the personnel of Coast Guard Station (CGS) Albay who immediately deployed its men along with representatives from the Port State Control Division.
At around 3 pm local time Monday , the freighter was pulled free and maneuvered northeast of Legazpi Port.
PCG Captain Tran Dai Nghia confirmed that no oil spill was seen at the area.
Port State Control Division issued the vessel with deficiencies relating to hull damage impairing seaworthiness, and safety and environment policy.
PSC also advised the master of the vessel to coordinate with its agency Hoang Anh Shipping to provide a surveyor from a classification society who will conduct an underwater hull inspection to determine the seaworthiness of the said vessel.
