One Dead, Three Injured in Oil Rig Explosion off New Orleans

One worker died and three more were injured in an explosion on Fieldwood Energy’s Echo Platform located in the Gulf of Mexico some 12 miles off New Orleans just before 3 p.m. local time Thursday, the U.S. Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) reports.

Fieldwood Energy said that the three injured workers were treated at an onshore medical facility. The Echo Platform was not in production at the time of the incident. The facility damage was limited to the explosion area and there was no pollution reported.

BSEE is coordinating with the U.S. Coast Guard during the response, and will investigate the incident.
