Freighter Sinks After Collision off Okinawa

Japanese freighter Hokuei 18 capsized and sank in shallow waters off Okinawa Port in Nagasuku Bay, after colliding with the 6,606 dwt Chinese general cargo chip Yong Sheng VII on Sunday, November 16, The Okinawa Times reports.

The 86-meter-long freighter’s bottom starboard side is submerged under water, while the portside is protruding from water. Five crew members on-board at the time of the accident were removed from the vessel with no reported injuries.

The freighter is reported to leak oil, and has been surrounded by booms.

The 2010-built, Panama-flagged Yong Sheng VII suffered only minor damage, and is currently moored in Okinawa Port.
