Image of the Day: Icebreaker Yamal Gets Its Teeth into Icy Waters

Russian nuclear-powered icebreaker Yamal has embarked on a journey to assist  research vessel Akademik Fyodorov in a  geophysical study off Russia’s continental shelf.

During the expedition, the two will collect geophysical data on presence of oil-and-gas at Russia’s continental shelf beyond the 200-mile zone. Once completed, the results will be used as a foundation for Russia’s application to UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf.

The researched area covers about 350,000 square meters.
