ClassNK Amends Rules for Survey and Construction of Steel Ships

Classification society Nippon Kaiji Kyokai, ClassNK, informed that it had released amendments to its Rules and Guidance for the Survey and Construction of Steel Ships.

ClassNK continuously reviews, updates, and amends its technical rules and guidance as part of its ongoing efforts to improve the safety of life and property at sea, and to protect the marine environment.

The Rules and Guidance are amended regularly in order to reflect the latest research results from damage investigations as well as changes made to relevant international conventions, IACS Unified Requirements, national regulations, and requests from the maritime industry.

The amendments, dated 30 June 2014, include the following:

  • Requirements related to Hull Surveys (Review of the definition of General Dry Cargo Ships etc)
  • Requirements related to “Black-Out Tests in Special Surveys”
  • Requirements related to “Plans and Procedures for Recovery of Persons from the Water”
  • Requirements related to “Strength Requirements for Ventilators and Air Pipes Fitted on Exposed Fore Decks”
