“K” Line, Partners Stage Oil Spill Response Drill

An emergency response drill was performed on the May 9th 2014 to ensure preparedness of optimum response towards any major maritime accidents that resulted in large-scale oil spill with human casualty.

VLCC “TAMAGAWA”

The scenario of the drill evolves as “K” Line VLCC “TAMAGAWA” collides with a ferry boat in Tokyo bay when she is heading towards Kawasaki. The accident results in huge oil spill through the damage part of port side fuel oil tank of “TAMAGAWA” causing physical injury to a crew member and passenger of the ferry boat.

3rd Regional Coast Guard Headquarters, Maritime Disaster Prevention Center, professionals from other related firms of law, insurance, consulting, and the Ship Management Company actively cooperated and participated in the exercise.

At the end of the drill, a mock press conference was held as part of the complete drill proceedings.

“K” Line’s President Asakura, Senior Managing Executive Officer Aoki, Managing Executive Officer Kadono together with Ship Management Company’s (KLSM) Managing Executive Officer Saito attended the Q&A session of the press briefing.

” By conducting such exercise on regular basis, we remind ourselves again to be fully prepared on the contingency plan to deal with a ‘large-scale accident response’,” “K” Line said in a press release, stressing importance of raising safety awareness and conducting similar programs like “Winter Safety Environment Protection Campaign” along with regular vessel visits by executive officers to improve safety consciousness onboard and ashore.
