Great Future Plans for Luka Koper (Slovenia)

Luka Koper’s Management Board President Gašpar Mišič hosted LI Yong, Director General of United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) on 9th April 2014.

Following the presentation of the port and its development plans Mr LI Yong concluded that Luka Koper is well organised and not important only for Slovenia but also a wider Central European region.

My attention was in particular attracted by the fact that you work 24/7, throughout the year which enhances your competitive advantage. After what I have seen, I feel confident that you have a bright future,” said Director General LI Yong who is of Chinese origin.

In December last year Mr. Mišič visited Ningbo. During his tour, he explained the guest the importance of Chinese market to Luka Koper; all key investments in port infrastructure that are currently underway or in the company’s short-term plans are intended to increase cargo throughput between Far East and Koper.

Indeed, north Adriatic provides the shortest logistics route for ships connecting Far East and Central Europe. “Our plans are very ambitious but feasible. Luka Koper doesn’t have problems but just challenges. In the next month, the depth of Basin I will reach 14 metres which will allow the arrival of large container vessels. By 2018, our Container Terminal will handle over a million containers a year. We are focused on the development and growth whilst expecting the state to invest in transport infrastructure, in particular the construction of the second railway track Divača-Koper,” was clear Management Board President Gašpar Mišič.

During his visit to Luka Koper, UNIDO’s Director General LI Yong was accompanied by his close associates as well as the representatives of the Ministry of Economic Development headed by Marjan Hribar, Director General of Tourism and Internationalisation Directorate, and Blanka Jamnišek, the Ambassador of Slovenia and Permanent Representative of the Republic of Slovenia to the International Organisations in Vienna.
