USA: Port of Vancouver Welcomes MV Shengking

The Port of Vancouver USA welcomed the M/V Shengking commanded by Capt. Norman McNee of Scotland on her maiden voyage to the United States on November 12, 2013.

McNee and his 25-member British, Ukrainian, Chinese and Filipino crew were welcomed to Vancouver by representatives from Swire Shipping, Interocean Steamship Corporation, Ports America, Red Lion Inn at the Quay, and Port of Vancouver USA.

The keel was laid March 20, 2013 and the vessel was launched September 9, 2013. The M/V Shengking is owned and operated by the China Navigation Company Limited and is one of 18 vessels the company currently has in service. The vessel is 656 feet in length and has a deadweight capacity of 30,814 metric tons.

The M/V Shengking is among the industry-leading “S” Class vessels, which are rated best in class in environmental initiatives. Swire Shipping, the liner shipping division of the China Navigation Company Limited, has selected these vessels to produce lower fuel consumption per ton mile, resulting in a lower carbon footprint. Other features include the ballast water treatment system required to meet future environmental regulations, a main engine and propeller designed to achieve lowest possible fuel consumption and four electric cargo cranes that use 40 percent less power than a standard crane.

Working with world class naval architects, designers and classification societies, we have selected the latest technology to deliver the highest levels of fuel efficiency, reduce emissions and increase cargo handling productivity,” said Frank Leigh-Spencer, operations manager for Swire Shipping.

Before docking at the Port of Vancouver, the M/V Shengking sailed from British Columbia, then to the Port of Vancouver where she unloaded steel and containers and loaded containers, trucks and a boat for Australia and the South Pacific. The vessel will then travel to Los Angeles, California, Suva, Fiji, and Brisbane, Port Kembla and Melbourne in Australia before its final stop in Tauranga, New Zealand.
