UPDATE 1: MOL Comfort Breaks in Two

The MOL Comfort incident that occurred yesterday, June 17, 2013, has taken serious proportions. Namely, MOL-operated containership, after reported crack amidships, has broken into two.

MOL Comfort, an 8,000 TEU containership, was en route from Singapore to Jeddah carrying a cargo of 4,500 containers when its hull broke and the vessel started taking in water in the hold.

All 26 crew members were safely rescued by other vessels in the area.

According to a report by IANS News, the broken vessel sank shortly afterwards in the same position, with many containers scattered in the Arabian Sea and an indeterminate quantity of oil spill.

On the other hand, the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre Mumbai (MRCC) said in its tweet that the two sections are still afloat.
